Paach Masala vs Garam Masala: When to Use Which
Both Paach masala and garam masala sit in the everyday spice box of a Maharashtrian kitchen, and they are often confused. They are not interchangeable, so here is a quick guide to what each one does.
What is Paach masala?
"Paach" means five in Marathi. Paach Masala is a five-spice blend made from whole spices for depth, warmth and a balanced, earthy flavour. It is meant for everyday cooking: dals, sabzis, stir-fries, snacks and even non-veg dishes.
What is garam masala?
Our Garam Masala is made from handpicked, sun-dried whole spices such as cloves, cardamom, cinnamon and cumin. It adds a deep, warming aroma to dals, sabzis and curries.
When to use which
| Paach Masala | Garam Masala | |
|---|---|---|
| Style | Five-spice everyday blend | Warming whole-spice blend |
| Use it in | Dals, sabzis, stir-fries, snacks, veg and non-veg dishes | Dals, sabzis and curries |
| Typical use | Cook it into the dish as a base seasoning | Add toward the end for aroma |
A simple rule: Paach masala is a base you can cook into a dish, while garam masala is often added near the end so its aroma stays fresh.
Use both together
Many kitchens keep both. Our Paach & Garam Masala Combo includes two packs of each, and it suits bhaji, usal, curries and rassa. Browse the full range in our masala collection.
